Description
A long stretch of rainy weather in May followed with drier weather in July make this year a popular year to see lots of butterflies. I captured this photo on the last day of July in Ward's Island. I saw about hundreds of Monarch feeding on Japanese Knotweed flowers.
Reynoutria japonica, synonyms Fallopia japonica and Polygonum cuspidatum, is a large species of herbaceous perennial plant of the knotweed and buckwheat family Polygonaceae. It is commonly known as Asian knotweed or Japanese knotweed. It is native to East Asia in Japan, China and Korea.
The monarch butterfly or simply monarch is a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names depending on region include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species.
