Description
The sunbittern is an elegant bird with long legs, a slender heron-like neck with a relatively small head and a long bill. They measure between 46 - 53 cm and weigh from 180 - 220 g. The bird's body is quite stout and its plumage is full and soft with an intricate design of colors. The common name is derived from the normally concealed wing markings which reveal a multicolored; yellow, reddish-brown, and black -sunburst- on opening. The head is black with white stripes above and below the eyes and across the cheeks. The iris is ruby-red. The neck and breast are brown, upper parts chestnut, all barred with black. The throat is white, the abdomen buff. Hidden under the brown plumage is a rich orange-chestnut patch near the tip of each wing. The bill is fairly straight and long, the upper mandible black, the lower one orange. The legs are also orange.
East of the Andes, throughout the Amazonian regions of Columbia, Venezuela, the Guineas, and also northern Brazil, central Ecuador, and northeastern Peru.
